Here’s Why BMW Charges $80/Year Subscription for Apple CarPlay

Thanks to technological advancement nearly all carmakers in today’s day and age offer an infotainment system. Unlike before people are switching to Apple Car Play or Android Auto instead of relying on the automaker’s infotainment software. BMW recently made it to the headlines after they started charging $80 per year for wireless Apple CarPlay, a feature that is offered for free by others.

BMW representative explains why the premium car maker needs the extra money to offer Apple CarPlay. According to the representative, the wireless CarPlay module requires different hardware as opposed to the traditional wired setup. This means the company needs to test the module separately and ensure that the hardware works properly.

That apart the company may need to troubleshoot new feature and software while ensuring interoperability with the current infotainment system. In order to fix the issues, BMW engineers have to invest time and money.
Our Take

Cars these days are filled to the brim with gadgets and electronics. What it means is that the modern-day cars are more prone to electronic and software error as opposed to the ones that were manufactured earlier. This forces automakers to spend money on software development and ensure that there are no bugs on the software front. Unlike iPhones, cars are expected to last much longer and it becomes important to keep the software updates rolling in.Read Next:dare tv

That being said other automakers are still not charging a subscription fee for wireless Apple CarPlay. And it would be interesting to see if others will join BMW and levy an annual fee on their infotainment or continue offering the service for free. It is quite likely that other manufacturers might increase the sticker price to absolve the subscription fees, especially in premium luxury cars. It is worth noting that BMW is also offering 20-year CarPlay subscription at $300. Would you mind paying for software updates on your car? Let us know in the comments below.

Photos: What's New in iOS 13

The Photos app is one of the most important apps on the iPhone and iPad, housing all of the pictures that you've taken and offering up editing tools to make those images even better.

Over the course of the last few years, Apple has been steadily improving the Photos app with machine learning and other technologies to present your pictures in new and unique ways so you can do more than just view your photos - you can relive your memories. iOS 13 is no exception and has a slew of improvements that make the Photos app more useful than ever.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

Updated Photos Tab Organization

The main Photos tab in the Photos app has been overhauled in iOS 13, with a new design that's meant to put your best photos front and center. In addition to the iOS 12-style option to view all of your photos, there are new options to view them by day, month, and year.

Each of the time-based viewing options cuts out clutter, like screenshots, photos of receipts, and duplicate images, displaying all of your best memories without the cruft. Photos are displayed in a tiled view, with your best images displayed as large squares surrounded by smaller related photos.

The Days view in the Photos app shows you the photos that you've taken organized by each day, while the Months view presents photos categorized into events so you can see the best parts of the month at a glance.

In the Years view, you can see subsections for each year. In the current year, it will flip through each month automatically so you can get an overview of each month, but Apple did something unique for past years. When you tap into an older year, like 2018 or 2017, you'll see photos taken around the same time of year.

So, for example, if it's June and you tap the 2017 tab in June, you'll see photos that were taken in June 2017. Tapping into a specific year in this view swaps over to the Month view, where you can further tap into a target month, which then swaps to the Day view. You can also swipe a finger over the photos in the Years view to see a glimpse of key images from each month.

In all of the sections, Apple highlights titles like location, concert performances, holidays, and more, so you know where your photos were taken.

The new Photos tab is separate from the "For You" section introduced in iOS 12. For You also shows you curated photos, but the Photos tab organizes them around specific dates while For You focuses on aggregating content from multiple dates like beach days, trips, specific people, pets, and more.

Both the new Photos tab and the For You view are great for surfacing your best memories, making the Photos app a great tool just for browsing through your photo library.

How to Use the New Photos Tab in iOS 13
Autoplay Live Photos and Videos

In the new Photos tab, Live Photos and videos will autoplay silently so you can see a glimpse of action in the Day view, which brings the Photos tab to life and makes looking through your images a more dynamic, fun experience.

Extended Live Photos

When you have two or more Live Photos taken within 1.5 seconds of one another, there's a new Live Photos option that will play both at once as a short little video rather than just a quick animation in the Day view of the Photos tab.

Birthday Highlights

For your contacts you have photos of in the People album, if you have their birthdays assigned to them in the Contacts app, Apple will show you photos of the person in the "For You" section of the Photos app.

Screen Recordings Album

In iOS 13, if you capture a screen recording, it will be saved to a new Screen Recordings album automatically, much like screenshots go in the Screenshots album.

Overhauled Editing Interface

Apple in iOS 13 updated the editing interface in Photos, which you can get to whenever you tap on the "Edit" button on one of your pictures.

Rather than hiding editing tools down at the bottom of the image in a series of small icons, iOS 13 puts them front and center in a new slider that lets you scroll through each adjustment option. It kicks off with the standard Auto adjust, but if you swipe to the left on the editing tools, you can choose the specific adjustment that you need.

You can tap each edit you apply to see what the photo looks like before and after, so it's clear what each of the adjustments is doing. This new interface more closely mirrors third-party photo editing apps and puts more tools right at iPhone users' fingertips, making photo editing easier for everyone.

The editing tab in the Photos app has been updated to account for the new editing interface. When you open up edits, the adjustment tools are front and center, but if you tap the concentric circles icon on the left you can get to Live Photos adjustments where you can choose a new Key Photo.

On the right of the adjustment tool, there are filter options, and next to that, options for cropping and changing orientation.

Intensity Slider

For each editing tool, there's a slider that lets you tweak the intensity of the adjustment, which allows for more controlled edits than before. So, for example, you can select the "Exposure" adjustment tool to brighten or darken a photo and then use the slider to quickly get the desired effect. Intensity has specific numbers, so it's easy to tell how much of an effect has been applied at a glance.

New Editing Tools

In addition to overhauling the editing interface in Photos, Apple also added new tools for things like adjusting vibrance, white balance, sharpness, and more. Below, there's a list of all of the editing tools available in Photos in iOS 13:

Auto

Exposure

Brilliance

Highlights

Shadows

Contrast

Brightness

Black Point

Saturation

Vibrance

Warmth

Tint

Sharpness

Definition

Noise Reduction

Vignette

Apple has also improved the auto cropping and auto straightening features designed to make your photos look better with just a tap. When editing, you can use pinch to zoom to see the close-up details of a photo to get a better look at just what edits are doing to a particular area in an image.

How to Use the Editing Tools in Photos
Filter Intensity Adjustments

Though there are new editing tools available, the filters that Apple has long provided are there too. Filters in iOS 13 are more functional because the intensity of the filter can be adjusted using a new slider tool.

High-Key Mono Lighting Effect

iOS 13 adds a new effect to Portrait Lighting, High-Key Mono. High-Key Mono is a black and white effect that's similar to Stage Light Mono, but designed to add a white background rather than a black one.

High-Key Mono Lighting is limited to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Portrait Lighting Adjustment Tools

The Portrait Lighting effects added to Portrait Mode photos can be adjusted with a new slider option in iOS 13, which allows you to further tweak the added lighting. It's designed to allow you to adjust the intensity of the lighting, which can drastically change the look of a portrait image.

Portrait Lighting adjustment tools are limited to the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Video Editing

There have been photo editing tools available in the Photos app for quite some time, but in iOS 13, many of the same tools are available for editing video for the first time.

Apple offers editing tools to adjust parameters like exposure, contrast, saturation, brightness, and more, plus there are built-in filters that you can apply. You can also use the same Auto adjust feature in videos that's long been available for photos to get a quick improvement.

Video editing tools, like photo editing tools, feature sliders to control the intensity of your adjustments so you can make dramatic or subtle changes to the lighting, brightness, and other elements and there continue to be available tools for adjusting video length.

There are also tools for straightening a video, adjusting the vertical alignment, adjusting the horizontal alignment, flipping the video, changing the orientation of the video, and cropping it.

None of these video editing tools were available in iOS 12, and these kinds of video edits have in the past required iMovie or another video editing app, but now video editing is as simple and straightforward as photo editing. Sponsor ads:

Snapchat Employees Used Internal Tools to Spy on Users

Snapchat Employees Used Internal Tools to Spy on Users
A detailed Motherboard report highlights how Snapchat employees have been using internal tools to access user data and spy on them. The report is based on the account of two former Snap employees, a current employee, and internal company emails.

Several departments inside Snap have dedicated tools for accessing saved user snaps, their location history, phone numbers, email addresses, and more. The tools are primarily used by Snapchat to meet the demand of law enforcement agencies. However, these tools have been misused by Snapchat employees for spying on users.

One of the internal tools known as SnapLion is used for collecting user data in response to a court order or subpoena. Snapchat’s ‘Spam and Abuse’ team also has access to this tool for fighting spam and bullying on the platform. However, former and current employees revealed that Snapchat’s customer operations team and even the security staff also have access to the tool.

SnapLion provides “the keys to the kingdom,” one of the former employees who described the abuse of accessing user data said.

Internal emails have revealed that Snapchat employees use SnapLion to find the email address linked to an account without any law enforcement order being in play. On the plus side, emails also show the tool being used for investigations against child abuse.

One of the former employees said that data access abuse occurred “a few times” at Snap. That source and another former employee specified the abuse was carried out by multiple individuals. A Snapchat email obtained by Motherboard also shows employees broadly discussing the issue of insider threats and access to data, and how they need to be combatted.

In response to the report, a Snap spokesperson said that protecting the privacy of its users is paramount for the company.
Our Take

Ideally, Snapchat should limit the access of SnapLion to certain employees, but the tool has available across the company to all employees. The tool was also used for resetting passwords of hacked accounts and other administrative purposes.

Snapchat implemented end-to-end encryption at the beginning of this year.

The report highlights how user data is not safe in the hands of the company which created the product itself. If you are a heavy Snap user, make sure to read the full report. With end-to-end encryption in place, Snap users should feel a bit more secure about their data.

Fix iPhone Volume Button Stuck

Tip 1: Clean Volume Button

It might be possible that your device volume buttons are dirty and have debris and that's why the volume button gets stuck. Thus, in this situation, you need to make sure that your iPhone volume button and sockets are cleaned. You can clean using a cotton bud and run it gently around the buttons and socket. You can dip a cotton bud into the water as direct water contact can damage the volume button. Last, you can use dry bud to clean any moisture.
Tip 2: Clean Charge Port and Headphone Jack

It can also possible that your iPhone headphone jack and connectors are having some dirt particles that cause you to face this problem. Thus, use a toothpick to clean your device charge port and headphone jack. Gently remove all dust particles, dirt, and debris so that problem gets solved. Once you are done with cleaning, try to turn volume buttons on or off to check if they are now working properly.
Tip 3: Squeeze the Volume Button

If the above tips fail to fix the issue, then it might be the case that your iPhone volume button is jammed. In this scenario, you can fix the issue by pressing the buttons several times. This tip works for many iPhone users and maybe it also works for you.
Tip 4: Update iOS on your Device

Make sure that you have updated your iPhone to the latest iOS version. If the problem you are facing now is due to a software issue, then it will certainly get resolved by simply updating your device to the latest software. Generally, Apple fixes the many bugs in the latest iOS version. You might don't know that iPhone 6 volume button stuck problem generally occurs due to the unstable iOS version on your device.

Apple Seeds iOS 12.3 Beta 6 to Developers

In March, Apple officially released iOS 12.2 to the public. That software wasn’t a major upgrade, but it did welcome things like Apple News+ to the mix.

Now, Apple is moving ahead with betas for the next update to its mobile operating system. Today, Apple officially seeded the sixth developer beta of iOS 12.3. This is appears to be a minor update in scale, with the company focusing primarily on behind-the-scenes bug fixes and general overall improvements. However, the company did lay the groundwork for the public launch of its revamped TV app later this year with the first developer beta. Now, with the sixth beta, Apple will continue to tweak the formula to get it ready for the public.

If any additional discoveries are made, we will update this post accordingly.

To update, developers that have registered their supported iOS devices simply need to open Settings –> General –> Software Update and then follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple typically kicks things off with a developer beta, but a corresponding public beta of the same software will likely launch in short order. If you don’t want to wait for the public beta, and want to try out the developer beta –but you aren’t a developer yourself– you can do so for free by following the method through this link.

Check out our article for all the new features and improvements new features discovered in iOS 12.3 so far.

Locating passwords isn't an easy task. This is due to the fact that the directory file will contain lots of duplicates

Cracking of iOS 10 backups (and above) will require longer time.

Foxconn 'Remains Committed' to Wisconsin Plant and Promise of Eventually Employing 13,000 Workers

Apple supplier Foxconn today said that it remains committed to its contract to build a display plant and research facility in Wisconsin (via Reuters). The company's comment comes a few days after Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said that the state wanted to renegotiate the Foxconn deal, partly due to the belief that the Taiwanese company was not expected to reach its goal of creating 13,000 jobs in Wisconsin.

Foxconn's original goal for the project was to eventually employ 13,000 workers on the site, and today the company has confirmed that it "remains committed" to this plan. Foxconn initially announced the project in 2017 at a White House event alongside President Donald Trump. Governor Evers recently took office in January 2019, inheriting the deal to Give Foxconn $4 billion in tax breaks and other incentives.

“Foxconn’s commitment to job creation in Wisconsin remains long term and will span over the length of the WEDC (Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation) contract and beyond.”

Over the years, Foxconn's Wisconsin plant has gone through many iterations as the supplier faced new roadblocks and cost-cutting measures. The plant was designated as a TV display factory in its early stages, then pivoted to small to medium-size displays for smartphones, infotainment systems, and other "niche products".

In early 2019, Reuters reported that Foxconn would greatly scale back its plans to produce displays of any kind in Wisconsin and instead focus on research and development. The news came from Louis Woo, assistant to Foxconn CEO Terry Gou, who said Foxconn is "not building a factory" in Wisconsin.

According to Woo, the steep cost of making advanced screens for TV sets and other devices in the United States led to the decision. Around the same time, the company confirmed it had slowed its pace of hiring, down to about 5,200 people expected by the end of 2020.

As of now, Foxconn has fallen short of its employment goals in 2018, hiring just 178 full-time workers rather than the 260 it intended to for the year. The supplier has to meet certain hiring and capital investment goals under its current contract to qualify for tax credits in Wisconsin. With its inability to meet the 260 hiring target last year, it failed to earn a tax credit of up to $9.5 million.Sponsor ads:

Man Pleads Guilty to Accessing Apple Accounts of Famous Athletes and Musical Artists

Apple has a gigantic focus on security and privacy, which definitely still feels like a reaction to high-profile hacking events several years ago.

In particular, the celebrity accounts that were hacked and certain sensitive photographs were distributed across the internet. The individuals accused of that particular digital break-in have been sentenced, including a former high school teacher who was recently sentenced to 34 months in prison over the hack.

Now, a man based out of Georgia has pleaded guilty to hacking into several different Apple accounts that are owned by athletes and rappers. Not only that, the accused distributed thousands in funds from the victims’ accounts. The individual in question has been identified by the United States Department of Justice as Kwamaine Jerell Ford, age 27. The court documentation reveals that Ford used a phishing scam to gain credential information from NFL and NBA athletes, as well as high-profile musical artists.

Ford used an email phishing scam to get the log-in credentials, posing as an Apple support representative. At the time of publication, the Justice Department has not revealed which athletes or artists were hacked.

After gaining control of the accounts, Ford then changed certain elements so that the account owners could not access them on their own. Ford used the funds he distributed from the victims’ accounts to cover travel expenses, and also bought a range of other things, including home furniture.

“The high profile victims in this case are an example that no matter who you are, hackers like Ford are trying to get your personal information,” said FBI special agent Chris Hacker. “This case demonstrates the need to be careful in protecting personal information and passwords, especially in response to suspicious e-mails. Hopefully this is a lesson for everyone, not just the victims in this case.”

Ford has been in the sentencing part of the case for quite some time. Back in April of last year, he was charged with a variety of counts, including wire fraud, computer fraud, and aggravated identity fraud. At this latest trial, Ford officially pleaded guilty to only one count of aggravated identity theft and computer fraud.

Final sentencing will take place later this summer.
Our Take

These high-level hacks aren’t common, but when they happen they have consequences. Not only for those undertaking the crimes, but also the companies attached to them. Apple has doubled down and security and privacy as a result, much to the chagrin of law enforcement agencies like the FBI in the United States.
We Want To Hear From You

What do you think Ford should be sentenced to for the crimes he committed?

How to jailbreak iPhone XS/XS Max/XR on iOS 12

How to jailbreak iPhone XS/XS Max/XR on iOS 12

The latest build of unc0ver jailbreak adds support for A12-chip models. Here’s how you can download and install it on iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR.
UNC0VER NOW SUPPORTS A12(X)-CHIP DEVICES

Yes, you heard that right. unc0ver jailbreak 3.0 is now compatible with A12 and A12X devices.

But here’s the catch – you can’t install or run Cydia tweaks on your iPhone or iPad; the reason being the lack of a functional Substrate version.

Thankfully enough, development is going on in full swing behind the scenes with Pwn20wnd releasing beta updates on a regular basis.

So, it shouldn’t take long for Saurik to add support for iPhone XS and other iOS devices, now that the jailbreak is ready.

As of this writing, the latest build of unc0ver jailbreak is Beta 45, which has the following features –

Export/Unexport Kernel Task Port

Dump APTicket (onboard SHSH Blob)

Overwrite the Boot Nonce

Set HSP4 as TFP0

Log Slide

Log ECID

Stop automatic OTA updates

Remount root filesystem as read/write

Restore root filesystem

Disable app revokes
WHICH A12/A12X DEVICES ARE COMPATIBLE?

All devices that have an A12 or A12X processor are compatible with iOS 12 jailbreak. Here’s the complete list of supported models –

iPhone XS

iPhone XS Max

iPhone XR

iPad Pro (11-inch)

Third-generation iPad Pro (12.9-inch)
REQUIREMENTS

iPhone XS/XS Max/XR

iOS 12.0-12.1.2 firmware

A computer running Windows, Linux, or macOS

Cydia Impactor

Lightning-to-USB cable

Internet connection
HOW TO JAILBREAK IPHONE XS (MAX) AND IPHONE XR ON IOS 12
WITH COMPUTER

Step 1 Firstly, you will want to download the IPA file of unc0ver jailbreak from this link. Once the IPA file is ready, place it on your desktop

Step 2 Download Cydia Impactor from this link and connect your device to your computer.

Step 3 Start Cydia Impactor and drag the IPA file you downloaded in step 1 over to its window.

Step 4 Enter your Apple ID and password to authenticate the installation. Wait for the installation to complete.

Step 5 Once the app appears on your home screen, launch it and tap Jailbreak. If everything goes right, the exploitation process will commence.

Remember, your iPhone or iPad will start multiple times during the exploitation. This is a totally normal occurrence and you should let the app do its thing until all steps are carried out.

Step 6 When the app displays the “Jailbreak completed” message, your device should be jailbroken.

WITHOUT COMPUTER

Step 1 Open Safari web browser and visit this URL – https://ignition.fun/

Step 2 Select the Use Now (Web) to install the jailbreak app without installing Ignition. Alternatively, you can select Install Now (App) to select the installer. However, for the sake of this tutorial, the first option shall suffice.

Step 3 Now navigate to the second tab present at the bottom of the toolbar.

Step 4 Select unc0ver new Beta and tap GET.

Step 5 Tap the Install button when your device prompts you to install the app.

Step 6 Don’t open the app just yet. Instead, open the stock Settings app, go to General > Profiles & Device Management and trust the enterprise certificate tied to unc0ver app.

Step 7 Launch the jailbreak application from your home screen and tap Jailbreak.

Step 8 Wait for the exploitation process to complete.

Since Saurik is yet to update Cydia Substrate for A12 devices, you will have to make do with what you’ve got.

All in all, the current beta version has nothing of value to offer except for blocking updates and disabling app revokes.

However, if you are interested in doing manual which obviously I wouldn’t recommend at this stage, go ahead and install FilzaEscaped or GeoFilza Filza replacement for iOS 12. Also Read:5 Best ExtraTorrent Alternatives after ExtraTorrent Shut Down Permanently 2019!
